The Little Hong Kong of the South

Pagadian, nestled in the Zamboanga Peninsula of Mindanao, is known as the “Little Hong Kong of the South” due to its dramatic, hilly terrain plunging toward Illana Bay, a striking resemblance to Hong Kong’s sweeping urban hillsides. This unique topography gives the city its charm, with sloping roads, elevated vantage points, and coastal views that make every turn a scenic experience. Beyond its natural beauty, Pagadian is also a thriving gateway to the southern Philippines, known for its iconic tricycles designed to navigate steep streets, vibrant marketplaces showcasing local produce and crafts, and a growing reputation as a destination for both commerce and tourism.

As the regional center of Zamboanga del Sur, Pagadian serves as the economic, political, and cultural hub of the province, linking surrounding municipalities to trade, education, and government services. Despite its growing urbanization, the city maintains a welcoming atmosphere, with friendly locals, diverse communities, and a pace of life that blends the energy of a bustling center with the warmth of a coastal town.

Pagadian City has a unique and practical transportation system that has evolved to suit its hilly terrain.

  • Bao-bao

The most common and iconic mode of transport within the city is the "bao-bao," also known as the Bajaj RE or a tricab. These tricycles are uniquely designed with a sidecar inclined at a steep angle up to 40 degrees to safely navigate the city's steep, sloping streets.
  • Capacity: A bao-bao can typically fit up to 5 passengers, with two on each side of the driver and one at the back.
  • Fares: Fares are affordable and distance-based. The starting fee within the city proper is 15 PHP, with prices for longer trips ranging from 20 PHP to 50 PHP. It is recommended to agree on the fare with the driver before the trip.
  • Other Transportation

  • Motorcycles: Single motorcycles are also used for shorter trips and can serve as a quick alternative to bao-baos for navigating the main city routes.
  • Multicabs (Small Vans): For travel to nearby towns and municipalities, multicabs are the primary mode of public transportation.
  • Private Vehicles: For a more comprehensive tour of the city and its surrounding areas, private vehicles can be hired, often as part of a tour package.
